Did you know that the government grades water like it does most other things Like Food, Meat, Agricultural Products, Dairy, etc…?? It has chosen T.D.S. as a grading method.
What is T.D.S. you ask? Good question! T.D.S. is an acronym for TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS. It refers to the number of metals and other solids that have dissolved into the water and are carried by it, such as the limestone in our local water that comes from vast underground aquifers, primarily but, not entirely made of Limestone as well as Magnesium! There are many other elements in our waters.
The Government’s standard is as follows: 1-50 ppm TDS (parts per million) is FOOD GRADE (Most Suitable for cooking and drinking) 51-500 ppm TDS is WORKING GRADE (Suitable for General Use: Showers, Laundry, Toilets, Washing the car, watering your plants, etc..and even Drinking or Cooking!) 500+ ppm TDS is considered UTILITY GRADE( Suitable only for Industry and is typically what comes from the ground or a well.)
In 1992 the Government set a standard for municipal water plants, MAXIMUM TDS level of 250 ppm in public water supply! The Municipal Water Authorities pushed back and claimed this standard far too expensive to meet!! So, what did Uncle Sam do? He said, O.K.! we will double the standard to 500 ppm so the Water Districts could save money! Remember, 500 ppm is UTILITY GRADE WATER!
